Reading
We have been reading to find details and text evidence as support for answering questions. Students have been reading informational articles in the Storyworks and Time for Kids magazines and working with partners to find main ideas and details about each article.
Please remind your child to turn in their reading logs. Students are expected to keep a log of their at-home reading and turn in when completed. Points are given in Power School for each completed log: 1 point is given for only reading at school, 4 points are given for logs showing only reading at home, and logs with both school and home reading are awarded either 2 or 3 points--the higher the amount of reading at home, the more points. Students are expected to complete at least 10 points towards logs each marking period.

Math
We are currently working on unit 4 in the Everyday Math text. Students are reviewing fraction concepts, such as finding equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, and doing basic operations such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication with fractions.
We will have a test over fraction operations on Tuesday, January 23. During this unit, students will also be working to convert between fractions, decimals, and percents.
Daily homework is due the day after it is assigned. I do not grade that homework--students check it themselves. However, they receive points for having it completed each day. In addition, students are expected to complete 2 or 3 pages in their formative assessment packet and turn that in every Thursday. The pages in the packet are graded by me, but students make correct any errors and return them to me any time during that unit.
During each unit students have a dictionary to help them organize vocabulary terms as well as a formative assessment packet to practice skills that will be on the test. Dictionaries are also due each Thursday with that week's words completed.
